EDITORIAL COMMENT by Harold Goodwin
Competition in the sun, sand and sea beach holiday market
becomes more aggressive each year. The number of resorts and
beds grows apparently inexorably and established resort
destinations come under increasing pressure form new resorts in
the eastern Mediterranean and further a field in the Middle East
and Asia, although the recent horrific bombing of the tourist
nightclub in Bali has effectively put Indonesia's resorts and
beds out of the market place.

The beach holiday market has always been vulnerable to changes
in transport. The British seaside resorts lost out with the
emergence of cheap charter flights, the southern European
resorts are now facing tough competition from resorts further
south and east as the relative cost of long haul flights
falls. The beach market is very much a buyers' market -
resorts are vulnerable to competition in large part because the
product is relatively undifferentiated.

The Municipality of Calvia on Majorca had the courage to 'blow
up' a hotel and take the beds out of the market place creating a
nature reserve and differentiating the product. The strategy is
beginning to work. Calvia in hosting the second international
conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations in April 2004
to share its experience of creating a better place for people to
live in and a better place for tourists.

The tourism industry opposed the introduction of the ecotax in
the Balearics, levied at E1 (62 pence) per night. The Gambia has
introduced a GBP5 tourist tax to be collected on arrival - the
Gambian Tourism Authority intends to use this money to improve
the environment and the tourism experience. Frances Tuke of ABTA
is reported (in The Observer on Sunday) as saying that "if it
brings lasting improvement to Gambia as a holiday destination,
then we are in favour". As the Algarve and the Balearics are
realising, if they are to continue to attract tourists they need
to offer a new product - one which offers a range of cultural
and natural heritage experiences for that growing part of the
market not primarily interested in the price of the booze and
sundowners around the pool. Responsible Tourism makes sense.
